Let's jump into one of my all-time favorite scenes in DOS. The end of the barrel scene when they come ashore. It really marks another milestone in Thorin and Bilbo's relationship. See below. Thorin can't keep his eyes off Bilbo. He's completely enamored by him and moves to be closer to him almost every chance he gets from this point forward. I had to shorten this gif by over 3 seconds to make it fit; that's how long he stares unblinkingly at Bilbo. Until the end of this gif, Bilbo isn't even the one talking. Balin is, so it's not like he's staring at the person talking.

And if you think I'm exaggerating by saying unblinking, here is a close-up gif of the first time Thorin blinks in the last 30 seconds. It's not until Dwalin breaks his line of sight!

Right after the above, we see Bard sneak up on Ori, and some chaos ensues. Bard has his arrow trained on the crowd and has demonstrated his proficiency with it. The shot pans out over dwarves' reactions for mere frames. It does this back and forth twice, as seen below.

Bilbo and Thorin are nowhere to be found. The spot they occupied moments ago is empty because you can see Balin. That brings us to the below. The first thing Thorin did when he saw there was danger was rush to Bilbo. He is quite literally pressing himself as close as he can to his side.

From this moment forward in the movie, Thorin stays remarkably close to Bilbo at all times if he can help it. Don't get me wrong he was fond of Bilbo before this but after the events of Mirkwood, this dwarf tripped down a river and into smitten.

I think he came to terms with how much he loved Bilbo in these few moments.

I really enjoy analyzing Bilbo's speech from the first Hobbit movie. This scene has so much depth that I could do multiple deep dives on it. People tend to focus on Thorin in this scene, but what I like to watch is Bilbo's body language. Take the gif below, for example. Bilbo just finished his speech, yet he continues looking at Thorin. You can tell he is fully aware he held eye contact for too long; just look at how he fidgets right after. Even after breaking the extended eye contact, he looks back at Thorin, TWICE.

image

Here it is again in slow motion. Pay attention to Bilbo's eyes. This is right after he breaks off eye contact.

image

This is in addition to the 3 seconds of prolonged eye contact they just shared. Below are unedited gifs of how long they stood there staring at each other. This is as much a turning point in their relationships as Carrock.

This is the moment Thorin truly starts to see Bilbo in a different light, and the moment Bilbo starts to realize that he craves Thorin's approval more than he thinks. That's why he looked so devastated 30 minutes later when Thorin was saying all those seemingly harsh things on Carrock. I think, in a way, those 3-second stares followed by awkward looking away is their "Oh, oh" moment. They're both starting to realize that whatever is between them is more than the sum of the quest they're on.

Also, look at Balin being absolute shipper trash.

I like to just stare at this 3-second long scene because it speaks volumes. Here it is again slowed down and zoomed in.

image

Thorin immediately moves to Bilbo. Nori looks back not just for confirmation but also because it looks like Thoirn might step in front of Bilbo but he doesn't. Bilbo and Thorin lock eyes you can see it in how Bilbo's eyes are glued to Thorin's face. Look at Nori very carefully because he does a little double-take at the look Thorin is giving Bilbo. Instead, Thorin assumes a defensive position behind Bilbo after nodding for him to continue.

image

Now take the above scene. Bilbo looks bewildered and completely out of his element. Why wouldn't he? He's never seen a town built for men. They are about to head into a more open area. Thorin hates areas like this look at the disdain on his face. He moves around Bilbo bracketing him into the middle of the company so he is in the safest possible spot.
